Have a Pinched or Trapped Nerve Causing Sciatica Pain?
Stop Sciatica and Don't Let It Take Away Your Life
Sciatica is a term used to describe a symptom associated with back pain. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the human body involving a lot of area. The nerve runs along the lumbar section of the spinal cord to the backs of a person's legs. When a person experiences sciatica, they most likely have another condition that is causing the pain in the back, hips and legs.
A herniated disc is one of the most common culprits to cause sciatica. Sciatica occurs when the disc presses against the nerve. The pain may extend below the back of the knees. It is not uncommon for a person with sciatica to experience a tingling sensation in their legs. The pain may start in the lower back, upper buttock area and progressively spread down the back of the legs. Walking or standing usually exacerbates the pain. Bending over can also irritate the sciatic nerve. Weakness in the legs is another common symptom associated with sciatica.
Spondylosis is a degenerative condition that can cause sciatica. As a person ages, the discs in the spine slowly deteriorate. People with osteoarthritis are more likely to develop spondylosis. As the discs wear down, the space between the vertebrae becomes smaller and the likelihood of pressure being placed on the sciatic nerve increases. Although spondylosis can occur in all three areas of the back, spondylosis in the lumbar region is a common culprit that causes sciatica.
Piriformis syndrome involves the piriformis muscle that begins in the pelvis region. The sciatic nerve is also in the same region. If the piriformis muscle is strained or injured during a fall or other incident, it may spasm. The spasm inadvertently puts pressure on the sciatic nerve. A muscle may be injured enough during a trauma to cause blood to pool, resulting in swelling. Swelling puts pressure on the sciatic nerve causing pain to spread throughout the leg muscles and radiate around the lower back and upper buttocks' region. Most likely, the muscle will heal, but if the damage was great enough, scar tissue may form. The scar tissue is tougher and not as flexible as muscle tissue. The build up of scar tissue may continuously put pressure on the sciatic nerve, causing sciatica.
