Discover The Alternative for Herniated and Bulging Disc Injuries

A herniated disc is a common problem for adults between 35 and 45 years of age. The term herniated disc describes what happens when a disc bulges, ruptures or becomes torn. The condition is also referred to as a slipped disc or a ruptured disc. The most common area in the back for a herniated disc to occur is in the lower part of the spine or the lumbar region. It is possible to have a herniated disc in any area of the spine. Discs are an important part of the spinal structure. The discs are filled with a jelly like substance that provides a cushion between the vertebrae the entire length of the spine. They act as shock absorbers and keep the vertebrae from touching or collapsing together.

A herniated disc does not always mean a person experiences pain. Pain occurs when the vertebrae or the fluid from the disc presses on a nerve. When this happens a person may experience a dull ache in their lower back. The location of the pain depends on what nerves are being pressed upon. Tingling, weakness or numbness in the lower extremities are symptoms of a herniated disc. If the herniated disc is low enough, it may cause sciatica. Sciatica occurs when pressure is placed on the sciatic nerve. Pain involving this nerve may radiate down the legs and through the hip area.

One of the most common causes of disc herniation is age. As a person ages, the discs begin to become less spongy due to deterioration. The discs tend to dry out and lose some of the fluid that provides the cushion. Small cracks and tears in the disc allow the fluid to leak out over time, leaving the disc unable to provide the proper shock absorbing qualities. Disc degeneration is a condition all people must face.

An injury can cause a herniated disc. If the disc is torn or ruptured as the result of an injury, the jelly like fluid in the disc will leak out. An injury does not necessarily mean a direct hit to the spine. It can happen while lifting a heavy object improperly or sudden twisting movements. Repetitive exercises or sports may also lead to a herniated disc.
