Back pain is the generic term used to define any pain in the back below the cervical area. The area in which the pain occurs is important to a doctor's diagnosing process. Doctors will work to identify whether the pain is radiating from the lumbar region or thoracic region. Lower back or lumbar back pain is a very common ailment many people are faced with. It is estimated three out of every four people have experienced some kind of lower back pain in their lifetime. The thoracic area is below the neck and above the lumbar region.

Back pain can be caused by a number of different things. Doctors can help identify the cause of the back pain by the symptoms presented. The cause may need to be treated surgically or through a series of chiropractor appointments. In some cases, the back pain may be the result of a temporary muscle or ligament strain. This can happen when a person bends in a way the body is not familiar with or using muscles that are weak. Lifting a heavy object incorrectly can also strain the back muscles. A herniated disc may result if the muscles are continuously contracted. Herniated discs may directly affect a nerve leaving a person feeling a sharp or stabbing pain in their back, hips or legs. Tingling or numbness in the extremities is often common with this type of injury.

Another cause of back pain is scoliosis. Scoliosis is a birth disorder or a degenerative disorder that develops over time and is more common in females. It causes the spine to curve abnormally resulting in back pain. Degenerative disc disease can also cause a great deal of back pain when the vertebrae are allowed to come together. The condition can happen as a person gets older or as the result of a trauma. With a trauma, a disc may be torn or ruptured. This condition can cause a person to experience pain in numerous areas all at once. The thick pulpy substance that provides the cushion between vertebrae leaks out and presses against other nerves, causing widespread back pain. A person with a ruptured or torn disc may feel pain radiating down their legs while walking or standing.
